Foundation

The International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society (SIS) was launched at the second UK Hispanic Linguistics Symposium, which took place 15-17 April 2004 at the University of Southhampton, UK.

The enormous success of the first UK Hispanic Linguistics Symposium, held at the University of Surrey in 2002, persuaded the organisers of the growing need for an association covering the areas of Spanish linguistics addressed by the papers presented at this First Symposium.

Vision

The International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society embraces the study, from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective, of the different varieties of Spanish that constitute Hispanic culture in the broad area of:

  • sociolinguistics

  • sociology of language

  • discourse analysis

  • pragmatics

  • applied linguistics

  • intercultural communication

  • conversation analysis

  • contact linguistics

  • anthropological linguistics
